All of the content on Wizard Fruit is written by me: Joseph Whittaker. I have been studying health and nutrition for 7 years and am currently completing my Master’s degree in Nutritional Therapy at the University of Worcester. Afterwards, I will become a qualified Nutritional Therapist and begin seeing clients on a one-to-one basis. At the same time, I plan on pursuing a PhD.
I take a rational approach to nutrition and health, based on science, and interpreted with logic and reason. My personal experiences and observations have also shaped my thought. I always endeavor to be objective, and challenge my own biases. My own personal health struggles have required me to seek out answers, beyond that of conventional allopathic medicine. I generally use a functional medicine framework when approaching health problems.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.- The Institute for Functional Medicine
For example, the treatment for high LDL cholesterol in conventional medicine is statins, whereas functional medicine asks what dietary, environmental and genetic factors have led to high cholesterol; and how can we correct those? Statins alter normal metabolism forcing the body to produce less cholesterol, but this does not address why the body is producing excess cholesterol in the first place. The medication is a band-aid solution and does not correct the underlying cause. The patient may be consuming excess sugar, the wrong types of fats or have nutrient deficiencies; correcting these would be best.
